Artist Statement

My photographic impulses have long been influenced by the spontaneity of street photography and, more recently, by the complexity and power of montage. Through my photography, I explore the strands of my life: childhood, family and friends, neighborhood, home, my passions. Working in series, I tell my stories only to discover they are often not mine alone.

My word and image book, Still Stepping: A Family Portrait, is a twenty-two year, long-form portrait of a family, related to me through marriage, as it cruises along, gets clobbered by a treacherous childhood illness and then moves forward. Amidst the quotidian of life, my photographs and the family’s words provide an intimate window into a world turned upside down then righted by two shaken but determined parents.
