Artist Statement

I am a figurative sculptor, a master tilemaker and sculpture instructor for over twenty years. Creativity is sustenance on a daily basis. In my lifetime of being an artist, I have explored a multitude of mediums other than clay, such as painting, weaving, repousse, encaustic, basketry, stained glass etc. However, I always came back to clay as I have been in love with clay since I was five years old. Clay is a tactile, primeval, transformative medium and working it is endlessly engaging. Historically, the first art form, before painting, was pottery, functional and artistic. Working with clay is physical, visceral, emotional and sensual. My sculptures are figurative because I find the human form as subject matter eternally intriguing. Although sculpting is my first love, for the past five years, I have been focused on my line of fine art tiles which are sold in galleries, shops and museums in California, New York and Florida. The success of the tiles has left little time for sculpting; however, I am so happy to be currently working on several new small scale sculptures in terra cotta and found objects.
