These paintings are based on small graphite line drawings, which is a departure from the starting point of previous bodies of work derived from detailed dark/light collages. The drawings are inspired by the Russian Constructivists, primarily Popova, and then approached and resolved intuitively through juxtaposition of color, line, and shape. Slow, subtle and deliberate modulation is essential to creating undulating color movement both within larger fields and discreet shapes. The contrast of sharp, flat edges against those softer modulated areas is vitally important to understanding and feeling the specific space of each painting.
